Case Study: Custom Hotel Coffee Box for The Hay-Adams, Washington DC

Designing Within an Established Identity
At The Hay-Adams in Washington DC, nothing is incidental. Pattern, proportion, and placement work together to define the guestroom experience.
This project focused on developing a custom hotel coffee box that aligns with the property’s design language while supporting daily use within the guestroom.

From Concept to Specification
Inspired by a Beatrix Potter tea set presented in a picnic box, the final direction translated into a structured coffee box, wrapped in faux leather and printed with a custom toile pattern developed specifically for the property to match their existing linens.
Internally, the layout was designed to support guest use and housekeeping efficiency:
- Dedicated compartments for coffee pods, cups, and condiments
- Proportions aligned with existing guestroom surfaces
- A format that supports quick resets between stays
This is where hospitality OS&E design becomes practical. The piece needed to maintain its visual intent while performing consistently in a high-turnover environment.

Sampling, Testing, Refinement
A production sample was developed and delivered for review.
From there, refinements were made across:
- Print scale and clarity
- Material finish and durability
- Interior configuration and spacing
Each adjustment ensured the final product met both design expectations and operational requirements.

The Final Result
The finished coffee box sits naturally within the guestroom, reinforcing the existing design language of The Hay-Adams.
It supports a daily guest touchpoint while maintaining consistency across rooms and over time.
Why It Works
This project reflects a broader approach to custom hospitality accessories and guestroom coffee solutions:
Design begins with context; Products are shaped by the space they serve
Function informs every decision; Layout, materials, and proportions support real use
Consistency is built in; Designed to perform across rooms, resets, and repeated handling.
At a property like The Hay-Adams, the goal is not to introduce something new for its own sake.
It’s to create hospitality products that align with the space, support operations, and perform consistently over time.
